Day 3 - May 12th

Today we drove from Sisters, OR to Boise, ID. We were hoping to catch up with old friends from our Long Beach days but unfortunately they weren't home. We started out at 8:30 this morning and enjoyed a brisk 31 degrees. For most of the drive we had varying amount of wind and equally cool weather.

The photography is poor but when you are traveling on a two lane road and there are no turnouts or margins it is hard to be too graphical even if you want to. What you are supposed to see is that underneath the irrigation system is a field of ice and the wheels are coated in ice. The shot we would loved to have taken was the fence totally draped in ice. We experienced some of the major metropolises of eastern central Oregon like Brothers (one house and a school house), Hampton, Riley, Hines, Burns, Juntura, Harper and Vale. It was between Riley and Hines that we saw quite a sight. Traveling in the opposite direction was an old man wearing a sheep skin jacket and an Elmer Fudd hat with the ear flaps turned town. He was driving a Gypsy Wagon being drawn by four horses. Behind the Gypsy Wagon was a trailer filled with "stuff" all necessary to his existence I am sure. Beside the trailer was trotting a spare horse or his riding horse. If your are not sure what we are talking about, consider the photo below but think simpler, painted red with white trim around the windows and door. It was a crazy sight as there was no shoulder on the road and shortly after we passed him we were passed by to semi trucks which would soon be bearing down on him. Besides the traffic we had just come off of a very long downhill run which means he was headed for a long uphill run...those poor horses. But despite all he was happy and waived at every passing motorist.

Billie and Jon this photo is for you. It was taken at a turnoff to Prineville Reservoir and we thought of our "dirt trip" when you first introduced us to some of this territory. We think it hasn't changed a lot but we don't remember much of the scenery from the first trip. Just kidding...you know we love you!

And finally for those of you who have not experienced the scenic beauty of eastern Oregon and Oregon Highway 20 we thought we would add this one last shot just to help with the imagery.
